Every gym has a hierarchy of respect. The person lifting the most weight gets the most attention. The person with the best technique gets almost none.
This is backwards. Technique is not the cautious option. It is the efficient one. Good technique means the target muscle does more work, the joints take less load, and the movement is reproducible session after session. Poor technique means compensations, injuries, and progress that stalls the moment load increases.

What good technique actually does
The purpose of technique in resistance training is mechanical advantage. You are trying to apply force to a specific muscle group, through a specific range of motion, without distributing that load to structures that were not intended to carry it.
When technique breaks down, one of three things happens:
- Load transfers to a stronger compensating muscle — a squat where the lower back takes over from the glutes and quads is not a squat anymore. You are loading the lumbar spine, not developing the legs.
- Range of motion shortens — cutting depth on a squat or range on a press reduces the stimulus to the target muscle. You are doing less work than the number on the bar suggests.
- Joint stress increases disproportionately — poor mechanics place shear and compressive forces on joints that accumulate quietly over months and become injuries that sideline you for longer than any single heavy set was worth.
None of this shows up immediately. Technique errors are slow in their consequences, which is why they are easy to ignore until it is too late.
The four most common technique errors
- Squatting with heel rise — caused by limited ankle mobility or incorrect stance width. The fix: elevate heels slightly with a wedge or plates while working on ankle mobility over weeks. Do not just raise heels permanently, address the root cause.
- Bar path drift on bench press — the bar travels in a vertical line instead of the slight arc from lower chest to lockout that mechanical advantage requires. Usually caused by incorrect setup or insufficient scapular retraction. The fix: film from the side and compare your bar path to the textbook arc.
- Lower back rounding on deadlift — caused by starting with hips too high, bar too far from the body, or insufficient hamstring flexibility. Creates enormous spinal load. The fix: hinge from the hip with the bar against the shins, brace the core, and do not start the pull until the back is neutral.
- Forward shoulder roll on overhead press — the shoulder rolls forward at the top of the press, loading the anterior capsule. Usually caused by insufficient thoracic extension. The fix: warm up thoracic mobility and set a firm arch before pressing.

How to assess your own technique
Most people cannot accurately evaluate their own technique while performing it. Proprioception, the sense of where your body is in space, is unreliable under load. You feel like you are in position when you are not.
The most effective methods for self-assessment:
- Film every session — a phone propped at the right angle costs nothing. Review the footage the same day while the session is fresh. Look specifically at the bottom position, not the middle of the movement.
- Use the pause test — pause for two seconds at the hardest point of each movement (bottom of squat, bottom of press). If your position collapses, you have found the weakness.
- Train lighter and focus — reduce load by twenty percent and spend one session per week with full attention on mechanics. This is not deloading. It is technical work.
- AI form analysis — tools that use your phone camera to track movement and give real-time metric feedback remove the subjectivity from self-assessment entirely.
Technique versus weight: when to prioritise each
At the beginning of any training phase, or when introducing a new movement, technique takes absolute priority. Load is irrelevant until the pattern is established.
As technique becomes automatic, you can increase load progressively while maintaining standards. The benchmark: if adding weight causes your technique to break down, the weight is too heavy. Drop it, rebuild the pattern, and increase again more gradually.
For experienced athletes, technique refinements continue forever. The margin between competent and excellent technique in a squat represents years of incremental improvement that produce meaningful strength gains even when programme design has already been optimised.
Technique is not a beginner concern. It is the permanent foundation.
